Remove a Password From Your Own PDF
This tool takes a PDF you already have the password for and exports a copy that opens without a prompt. You must type the current password. There is no recovery, no guessing, and no way around a password you do not have, which is the whole point of encryption.
A Worked Example: A Locked W-2
A payroll portal sends a W-2 as a PDF locked with the last four digits of your Social Security number. Your accountant asks for it by email, and you do not want to send the password in the same message.
- Open the PDF Password Remover and add the file.
- Type the current password and run it. A wrong password fails; it does not damage the file.
- Download the unlocked copy and open it to confirm every page is there.
- Send the unlocked copy, and keep the original locked file for your records.
The Tradeoff: Flattened Pages
The unlocked copy is rebuilt from page renders, so it looks the same but the text underneath is an image. You cannot select, search, or copy text from it, and form fields are gone. If you need selectable text, keep the original and open it with the password each time. Digital signatures and certificates do not survive the rebuild either.
When Not to Use This
- You forgot the password. Nothing here can help; ask the sender for a new copy.
- The file is someone else's and you were not given the password. This tool assumes you own the document.
- The PDF is locked only against editing or printing, not opening. Some readers let you print those without a password, and that route never touches this tool.
Practical Limits
Suggested working size is about 60 MB. Larger files render slowly because every page is drawn on your device. Processing runs in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib; the document and the password are not uploaded to JW Tool Box.
