What This Timer Is Best For

This page is meant for single-person countdowns that need to start immediately and stay visible. It works well for Pomodoro sessions, study blocks, meetings, workouts, cooking, interview practice, classroom pacing, and short breaks between focused tasks.

If you need a public event countdown that lasts for days, a shared team timer, or reminders that still fire after you close the tab, use a calendar or dedicated event app instead. This tool is intentionally simple: set a duration, press start, and keep the timer open while you work.

Recommended Presets for Real Work

Use case Starting point Why
Pomodoro focus block 25 minutes Balanced for concentration without too much resistance
Admin cleanup 15 minutes Good for email, review, and quick batching
Deep work sprint 45 minutes Better when context switching is expensive
Workout round 30 seconds to 5 minutes Easy to reuse for interval work
Short break 5 minutes Prevents breaks from drifting too long
Timed meeting segment 10 to 20 minutes Keeps discussions moving

How To Get Reliable Results

  1. Set the timer to the real session length you plan to finish, not an idealized one.
  2. Keep the tab open and visible when possible, especially if the session matters.
  3. Test a short timer first if you are relying on the completion state for a class, meeting, or workout.
  4. If you are presenting or using a shared screen, pair this with Keep Screen On so the display does not dim halfway through.

Good Ways To Use It

  • Put it on a second monitor during meetings so everyone can see the remaining time.
  • Use 15-minute starts when you are procrastinating; short starts lower the friction of beginning.
  • Run repeated 25/5 or 45/10 cycles for study, coding, and writing.
  • Keep it visible during cooking or lab work instead of relying on a phone that may lock or distract you.

What This Tool Does Not Try To Do

  • It does not sync across devices or team members.
  • It does not replace a calendar or reminder app.
  • It does not guarantee audio playback if your computer is muted.
  • It does not keep running after you close the tab.

Privacy and Review Notes

The countdown runs in your browser, and no account is required. Timer analytics may include the duration you select; no schedule is stored on our server. See the Privacy Policy for details.

The Full Pomodoro Workflow With This Timer

Pomodoro is the most common reason people open a countdown. A complete cycle looks like this:

  1. Set 25 minutes and start a focus block.
  2. Work until the timer reaches zero, keeping the tab visible so the ring acts as a visual cue.
  3. Take a 5-minute break with the short preset.
  4. Repeat. After four focus blocks, take a longer 15–30 minute break.

To stay in the flow, start each block immediately when the previous one ends instead of renegotiating the schedule. If 25 minutes feels too long at first, drop to 15; the habit matters more than the exact number.

Troubleshooting Timer Setup

  • No sound at the end — the browser may be muted or the tab throttled. Test a 5-second timer with sound on before a real session.
  • Timer drifts after switching tabs — some browsers throttle background tabs; the timer re-syncs when you return. Keep the tab open and visible for anything time-critical.
  • Screen dims mid-session — pair this with the Keep Screen On tool so the display stays awake during presentations, recipes, or workouts.
  • Unsure if it started — the progress ring and remaining time update immediately; check the preset value before pressing start.

Timer Etiquette for Shared Screens

When presenting or teaching, put the timer on a second display or project it so everyone sees the countdown. A visible deadline keeps discussions moving and tells participants exactly how much time remains without anyone needing to ask. Use a generous preset for the segment, then shorten it if the room is moving faster than expected.

Key features

  • Focus-Friendly Visuals: A large, clean progress ring allows you to check remaining time with a quick glance, minimizing cognitive load while you work.
  • Background-Aware Accuracy: Uses robust time-syncing logic to ensure the timer stays accurate even if you switch tabs or your browser throttles background activity.
  • Pomodoro & HIIT Presets: One-tap access to 25-minute focus blocks or custom intervals for High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

Frequently asked questions

Will the alarm sound if my computer is muted?

No, you must have your system sound on. We recommend testing the volume with a short 5-second timer first.

Can I use this for presentations?

Yes. Use the Full screen button for presentations. To prevent display sleep, open the separate Keep Screen On tool as well.

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

The remaining time is calculated from the scheduled end time and catches up when you return to the tab. Keep the tab open; a locked phone or suspended browser may delay the alarm.

Can I reuse my favorite durations?

Use the quick presets (5, 15, 25, 45 minutes) or set a custom duration and hit start. The previous values stay in place until you adjust them again.

Will it make a sound when finished?

Yes, with Sound reminder enabled, the timer plays a repeating tone and shows a completion dialog. Use Test sound first; muted devices or a suspended browser can prevent or delay sound. Dismiss or reset the reminder to stop it.
