JW Tech Tips: My First Web Development Project (Personal Story)
Why I built JW Tech Tips, what lives on the site today, and why this first project still matters to me.
Why trust this guide
- Written by JW Tool Box around the actual workflow or linked tool on this page.
- Updated when browser behavior, file handling, or platform dimensions change in ways that affect the steps.
- Focused on practical settings, safe defaults, and real tradeoffs instead of generic filler.

When I graduated college, I gave myself a challenge: build a real blog that proves I can ship—front-end, back-end, and a bit of growth hacking. That’s how JW Tech Tips was born. It’s my little “playhouse” where I stash experiments in web development, virtualization, and digital marketing.
Why I built it
- Skill gym: WordPress theming/tweaks, performance cleanup, SEO, and deploy habits you only learn by shipping.
- Marketing sandbox: GA + GTM tracking, A/B tweaks on titles and buttons, and small monetization tests to see what moves the needle.
- Personal log: Even when life and the pandemic slowed updates, this site stayed my favorite project—proof that curiosity compounds.
What’s already inside
- Proxmox VE no-subscription update walkthroughs, including the Proxmox 7 GUI repo toggle.
- OpenWrt and homelab guides: AES/Chacha20/Coremark benchmarks, running OpenWrt on Unraid/Proxmox, LAN IP changes, and port forwarding (plus OPNsense).
- WireGuard VPN on Unraid for work-from-anywhere setups.
- Bootable media toolkit: Ventoy for multi-OS USBs.
- Hardware curiosity logs: Raspberry Pi 4 launch thoughts (4K, USB 3.0, 4GB RAM) and other tinker notes.
How I run and improve it
- Structure: every tutorial explains the “why”, prerequisites, and step-by-step commands/screenshots.
- Data lens: GA + GTM and lightweight stats/ads plugins to watch bounce, search terms, and navigation paths, with headline/CTA tweaks for small A/B learnings.
- UX and performance: caching, image lazy-loading, mobile responsiveness, and a simple site search to stay fast and usable.
- Monetization tests: Adsense and a few VPS/hosting referrals to offset server/domain costs while keeping tools free.
What this post means to me
This is the first blog I ever built and shipped—it’s the anchor that keeps me mixing passion with craft: learn, break things, measure, then share. Even if updates pause, the site reminds me to keep exploring and teaching.
I don’t expect to keep updating JW Tech Tips, but I still have real affection for it. It reminds me of late nights learning new tech, building my homelab, tweaking virtual machines, ops, and NAS setups. I’m writing this as my first blog post because it captures that early energy—and the site will always feel like my first formal project.
